How to Sell Your Kids Bike
Selling your child’s bike once it’s outgrown is a great way to recover value, reduce waste and help another family get riding. With a little preparation, second-hand bikes can sell quickly and for a surprisingly good price which you can then put towards their next bike.
Our kids bike selling guide walks you through the best way to prepare, price, and sell a used bike with tips to help you get the best result.
1. Prepare the Bike for Sale
First impressions matter. A clean, well-presented bike tells buyers it’s been cared for. Do the following before listing your bike:
- Give it a thorough clean, including the frame, wheels and drivetrain.
- Check for damage. Repair where you can and note down any remaining damage ready to add to your description later.
- Inflate the tyres and lightly lubricate the chain
- Check brakes, bolts and steering are working smoothly and everything is tight where it needs to be
- Remove personal accessories like lights, bottle cages, and bells unless you plan to include them in the sale
A bike that clean and ready to ride is far more appealing to a potential buyer — and often sells faster!
2. Take Clear, Honest Photos
Photos (and video) are one of the biggest factors in whether someone clicks on your listing. Top tips:
- Use natural daylight and a clutter-free background to give a more professional look to your listing
- Take photos from multiple angles (side, front, rear) and a video if you have time
- Include close-ups of key areas like brakes, tyres and drivetrain (the usual areas which are prone to wear)
- Photograph any scratches or wear — this reduces questions and therefore saves time
Aim for 6–10 clear images and 1 video so buyers know exactly what they’re getting.
3. Write a Great Listing Description
A good description helps buyers feel confident and saves time by reducing back-and-forth questions. A bullet point list is the best way to keep the description short and snappy!
Make sure to include:
- Bike brand and model
- Wheel size (you can find this on the tyre)or frame size (measure from the crank axle to the top of the seat tube)
- Approximate age of the bike
- Overall condition (excellent, good, fair) - highlight any damage you noticed when cleaning and maintaining the bike
- Any recent maintenance or replacement parts
- Extras included (bell, mudguards, stand, etc.)
Being clear and transparent makes your listing stand out and helps it sell more quickly and reduces admin time.
4. Price it Fairly
We all want to get as much as possible for our bikes but you have to be realistic and price according to how quickly you want it sold:
- Search for similar bikes already sold on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or Vinted
- Consider the bike’s condition, age and original retail price
- High-quality kids bikes often hold their value well if looked after
If you’re not getting interest after a week, a small price adjustment can make a big difference.
5. Choose the Best Place to Sell
Popular options for selling online:
- Facebook Marketplace & Groups – great for local, fee-free sales. We recommend this one. We have an AIRO
- eBay – larger audience and auction options with no fees. You will need to consider organising postage
- Vinted – similar to eBay, with a large audience. Again, postage will need to be considered
Local collection is often easiest for kids bikes, but smaller bikes can also be posted if packaged securely.
6. Communicate Clearly & Safely
When buyers get in touch it is important that you:
- Reply promptly and politely
- Be honest when answering questions
- Confirm price, collection and payment method clearly
- If meeting in person, choose a public place or have someone with you
Clear communication will help to ensure a smooth, stress-free sale.
Why Quality Kids Bikes Hold Their Value
Well-designed kids bikes that are lightweight, durable and properly maintained often retain strong resale value. Buying quality first time can make upgrading to the next size easier thanks to the money you get back from the first bike.
