Bicycle Maintenance for Belt Driven Kids Bikes: A Simple Guide for Parents

It’s easy to assume your child’s bike is always in perfect riding condition, but for obvious reasons it’s better to double check. A new bike will frequently require adjustments within the first few weeks/months as parts bed in. A bike that has been ridden a lot will have been subjected to millions of vibrations which may cause parts to require adjusting and/or tightening over time.

Take a look at our top tips for keeping your bike tip top:

1. Keep It Clean

Kids love riding through puddles and mud, but all that fun can leave their bike dirty and prone to rust. After a fun ride, make cleaning the bike a quick activity you can do together! Use a soft sponge and mild soap to wipe down the frame, wheels, and especially the chain. Make sure to dry the bike completely after washing to prevent moisture from causing rust.

2. Check your tyres

Check that the tyres are properly inflated, as under-inflated tyres can make it harder to balance, especially on slippery surfaces. We recommend pumping them up to 40-65psi. Look for any signs of wear, and consider switching to tyres with better grip if they’re riding in challenging conditions.

3. Check your Wheels

Check the wheels are true by giving them a spin (they should not rub the brake pads or ‘wobble' from side to side); make sure your wheels are firmly attached

4. Check your brakes

Safety first! Wet weather can affect brake performance, so make sure the brakes are responsive and in good condition. Stand next to the bike and apply each brake as you try to roll forward; visually check the brake pads are not worn out.

5. Tighten your bolts

Use an Allen key or torque wrench to double check all the bolts are tightened appropriately (handlebar clamp bolts 5-7Nm, stem bolts 5-6Nm, wheel bolts 10-12Nm, seat post bolts 8Nm). Do not over tighten as this can cause damage.

6. Store it properly

If your child won’t be riding much during the colder months, it’s important to store the bike properly. Clean the bike thoroughly, and store it in a dry, sheltered place like a garage or shed to prevent rust and ensure it’s ready to ride once spring comes around. A CLUG is great for keeping a bicycle stored neat and tidy in a shed, garage, or in the house.

Ideally your child’s bike should be checked before every ride, especially if your child is racking up the miles. We would also highly recommend booking the bike in for an annual service with your local bike shop to make your bike run like new again and for added peace of mind.
